pace maker
What saves a life every day? Pacemakers, and what does a pacemaker run on? Batteries. Pacemaker batteries have to be able to run long periods of time without dying because the only way to change the battery is surgery.
Some requirements for a pace maker are :
>High safety so you are not electrocuted in ways that are not supposed to happen
>Long lasting
>High power
>Small body.
The first pacemaker battery was nickel cadmium and it didn't last that long. Though it failed within a hour, it wasn't the battery it was the actual pacemaker design.

hearing aids
Hearing aids for example also use batteries and need to last a long time. Imagine being deaf but having a hearing aid that allows you to hear. Your driving and a siren goes off in the distance then your hearing aid battery dies. You not noticing it, keep driving and then you notice people stopping to your right and flashing lights come speeding by. Everyone around you has stopped but you still blocked off one police car. The policeman walks up to your car and with a red angry face and large chubby features starts mouthing things to you. "What" you ask only to find out you can't hear your self..................................
While hearing aid batteries are easy to replace, unlike pace maker batteries, they still need to last a long time like in the story above.
